Come explore the sweets of Japan with some well-known and more obscure locations with my top 7 Bakeries and Dessert Bars.

I have always had a passion for backing so while I was staying in Japan, I decided to enroll into Le Cordon Blue at the Tokyo location and take a master's Course creating the cake pictured above. Not only was I able to enjoy Japanese baking but I also learn a few techniques on how to make Japanese pastries. The list I've complied is a shortened version of all the pastry shops I've tried and pulled out some of the best. The Japanese love their sweets and not only are they beautifully decorated they also use a quarter of the amount of sugar you will find in a western dessert making them a guilty free, healthier option to curve your sweet tooth.
7. Ducky Duck Cafe

Ducky Duck is a cake shop in Machida. They make a basic group of cakes and then add in seasonal cakes to their lineup. It's also common to see cakes that look like cute animals. They will sell whole cakes and slices at their shop. You can also watch them make the cakes and decorate them through a window of their cake studio.
6. Gatoh

Gatoh is a small cake shop located in Hon Astugi Japan. They specialize in Birthday cakes, but they have lots of little pastries you can get for just the single person. I'm still impressed by the frosting writing in Japanese. Since Hon Atstugi is a bit away from the big cities such as Tokyo and Yokohama they do not speak English in the bakery so pointing at what you need/want will work best.
5. FLO Paris

FLO Paris is a common chain bakery in Japan seen often in train stations. However, that does not mean they are not good. Most of Japan's pastry techniques and styles come from France. FLO often serves single serve pieces of cakes and pies. They also do a lot of fruit tarts. Just look at how juicy those grapes are. They tasted just as amazing.
4. Cookie Time

Just like the cup says Delicious! Cookie time is located in Tokyo by Harajuku St. and across the street from the train station and Meiji Shrine if you walk away from the hustle and bustle. If you're from the states, then this taste will be familiar to you with the crazy amount of sugar they use in their cookies and shakes, it's a sweetness overload. They bake a bunch of types of cookies that can be warmed to just the right amount of gooeyness. Milk is also available to those who need it. The shakes also use an ice cream blend of many flavor options. Ferrero Roche is my favorite chocolate, so I was extremely excited to find this Nutella chocolate fudge cookie shake as pictured above.
3. Shiro Higes Cream Puff Factory

That's right our favorite neighbor Totoro. This so happens to be my husband's favorite movie, so I surprised him with this treat for his Birthday. I learned really quick that this location is not easy to find. The small café is tucked away in a neighborhood in the Setagaya district of Tokyo, it was a 20 min walk from the nearest train station with a lot of turns so make sure you have GPS on your phones working. The café specializes in.... you guessed it Totoro cream puffs. They will run 4 to 5 flavors of cream with a matching adornment to tell them apart. The also sold Totoro cookies and the café is decorated with Totoros all over the place.
2. Café Ron Ron: Dessert Carrol

Café Ron Ron is located in a chic area of Shinjuku surrounded by boutique shops with a more western style architecture of a small downtown city. Once you walk in you will see the bright colors of all different kinds of adorable confectionaries circling around on a conveyor belt. It's an all you can eat location with a time limit of an hour so come hungry. I suggest getting the rose water to drink it pairs with all the treats nicely. Need a break from the sweets don't worry some plates will have potato chips or mini hot dogs to get a savory flavor in between mouthfuls of sugar.
1. Janice Wong

Looking for a romantic way to end the night. Check out Janice Wong located in NeWoman right across from the JR station in Shinjuku Tokyo. They are even known to stay open 24/7 for party reservations. This place will take you to the next level of desserts offering a few select options and a special cocktail to pair it with. I enjoyed sitting at the bar and watching them make the desserts right in front of you. Their flavors are bold and exotic to subtle and floral.
